Conflict about reproductive health and gender roles leaves youth unprepared to make choices

A strong, independent young woman is walking across her university campus. As she passes the familiar buildings and people, her mind is racing over her new discovery. Already she is defying the traditional cultural views of her country by being one of the few women to strive for a higher education, but now she has crossed the line. Unmarried, she has just discovered that she is pregnant and the consequences will impact every aspect of her life.

Youth caught between media and traditions

In our world, youth are caught in a complex predicament that both defines and imprisons them. Through the ever-increasing rate of globalization, they are inundated by the stereotypical roles of relationships that the media imposes upon them. The encouragement of “promiscuous” behavior by magazines, television, and music clashes with the standpoint of the older generations, and this leads to dilemmas that are unnecessary and avoidable if approached with a compromise by both sides.

Reproductive health issues plague youth around the world. It is unfair to overwhelm people with images and typecasts of what they should do while only providing education on the opposite stance. It is often uncomfortable and sometimes impossible to obtain the appropriate knowledge and protection for safe sex. Fearful of repercussions and judgment, many youth take unnecessary risks. They feel uncomfortable discussing reproductive health and preventable circumstances become life-altering situations.
